Clare Walton Biography

b. 1966, Derbyshire, England

Clare Walton is an English artist who lives on the edge of the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire. She currently paints full time in her own studio based in an old mill building in a small Derbyshire Village around the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
Clare is a portrait painter and illustrator. Her work is highly detailed which has evolved over a number of years since graduating in 1989 from Leicester University where she studied 3 Dimensional Design and Interior Design. Her work is about people, pets, animals and objects, which are influenced by the emotions of that time and place.

She likes to push the materials that she uses to the absolute limit and she tries to give a 2 dimensional painting as much of a 3 dimensional effect as possible. She works in pastels, pencil, oil paints, pen and ink.

She manipulates and explores materials within her work and is interested in the processes that are involved and the physicality of the materials.

Her early interest in architectural design on notable projects such as the design of the North stand at Twickenham led to a design award for the Council Chamber in Lincoln.

It is this diverse dimension to her life which has resulted in her new collection of beautifully drafted illustrations of peoples aspirations in her Desired Collection.

Clare has exhibited at galleries in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire and is currently working towards her first solo painting exhibition. Her wildlife paintings hang in private collections in the USA and Australia as well as the UK.

“My art is based on observation, interpretation, beauty, form and compositional balance, and I use pastels and pencils which I believe to be my perfect mediums. But while I adhere to traditional artistic values I still operate strictly within the parameters of modern life, in a way that I trust communicates with a contemporary audience.”
